Pond Management

Pond and water management can be a tough task at times. Your goals for the pond are also going to influence how a water body is managed in terms of clarity and vegetation. Often owners want the best of both worlds, a pool-like clean pond with plenty of big fish to catch. Well generally speaking that is a tough task to accomplish. Generally, it would be one or the other.

Consider aeration systems as an insurance policy for your fishery. Not that aeration is a 100% guarantee you won’t have a fish kill, but it will significantly reduce the chances of a winter or summer kill. Aeration systems are great for helping keep the water clean and clear by increasing the decomposition rate of pond solids. This in turn is decreasing the amount of nutrients available in the water column.

Vegetation control is a tricky subject. Many pond owners dislike vegetation and want all of it gone. However, if you wish to have a healthy fish population you need vegetation for all of their life processes to take place. Aquatic vegetation adds oxygen to the water through photosynthesis and also takes nutrients out of your water that would otherwise lead to algae growth. There are some instances where vegetation control is needed. The easiest way to do it is with chemical application.

These are naturally occurring microorganisms that are beneficial to your pond. They help to improve water quality and clarity by consuming organic waste and excess nutrients in your aquatic system. Although these are naturally occurring in your pond they typically are not in high enough concentrations to affect your water quality and clarity. There are several types of microbes that we can match to your pond's specific needs.

If you are worried about the quality of your water for your safety or the safety of fish and wildlife, we can get water samples done for you or give you information on how to get them done.

Fisheries Management

Fisheries management can seem complicated on the outside, but it is very similar to managing wildlife. They need the proper habitat and structure for all cycles of their life, proper food and forage and properly managed populations and predator-prey relationships. It is quite remarkable how we can manipulate fish populations and change the entire dynamic of the pond to retain a desired outcome. After our first visit with you, a plan will be written laying out the path to creating your dream fishery.

We work with the top fish suppliers in the region to be sure your pond is stocked properly and with strong healthy fish. We will design a stocking plan to meet your specific goals, so we are sure there is the right number of prey fish stocked with the appropriate number of predator species.

The most common tool we use to sample fish populations in ponds is through Electro-fishing. This is a process that sends electricity into the water to stun the fish. They will temporarily float up to the surface, allowing us to net those fish. After netting, we can assess the fish and take weight and length measurements, which will help us to determine future management practices.

Whether you are building a new pond or you want to better an existing pond, proper habitat and structure components will make all the difference to a fishery. Over the past 12 years, I have developed numerous methods to accommodate your goals and your budget, so we can build the best fishery possible for you. We use a combination of natural and artificial structures to build the best fishery possible.

We would love the opportunity to give you a full listing presentation and be able to tell you exactly what we can do to help you out.
